The club was formed in 1921, the ninth to be formed in Scotland, the first president being the Provost of Inverness Sir Donald Macdonald while the secretary and prime mover was Frank Critchley, whose son was also a member until his death in 2004. Our charter was presented in May 1923 by the president of Glasgow Rotary, our Mother club - in turn we have six daughter clubs, LOCH NESS, DINGWALL, NAIRN, ELGIN, STRATHSPEY and LOCHABER. The annals of the club are full of service to the community as well as great social occasions. It would be difficult to match the success of a bazaar held in 1926 which raised the magnificent total of £9000, most of it donated to the fund for the building of the Royal Northern Infirmary. This maybe does not sound all that much but before the war anyone with a salary of £1000 was thought to be grossly affluent and the £9000 is equivilent to £340,000 in today's terms. In 1927, 165 Christmas parcels were distributed at a cost of roughly 6 shillings each, or 27 new pence. Parcels now cost us about £5 - make your own calculations! The club has a few 'Honorary Members'. For example - The Rt Hon. Lord Ranald MacLean N.M., P.C. a distinguished retired Scottish Judge. His father was President of this club in 1965. Recently we have been delighted to add Ker Robertson who has given many years service to Rotary in Inverness. |
